W3C Releases XML

1998

In 1998 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) specification, allowing web pages to be tagged with descriptive labels.

Derived from SGML, XML was originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, but it plays an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere.
