In 1867 Edward A. Calahan of the American Telegraph Company invented the first stock price telegraph printing instrument, and ticker tape. The distinct sound of this telegraph printing instrument eventually earned it the name of “stock ticker.”

Calahan received U.S. patent 76157 for the stock ticker on March 31, 1868.
