In June 1976 Wang Laboratories, Tewksbury, Massachusetts, introduced the first CRT based word processor, the Wang WPS (Word Processing System). This was a special purpose computer with proprietary word processing software. By the mid 1980s about 80 percent of the top 2,000 U.S. corporations used Wang special purpose word processors. By 1992 the market went to general purpose PC's and by 1992 Wang was bankrupt.
