In March 1985 Richard Stallman of MIT published the GNU Manifesto under the general topic of "Realizable Fantasies in Dr. Dobbs' Journal of Software Tools, pp. 30-34. This was an outgrowth of the GNU Project, the goal of which was to develop "a sufficient body of free software [...] to get along without any software that is not free."
