A: Stanford, California, United States
In April 1994 Jerry Yang and David Filo, Electrical Engineering graduate students at Stanford, changed the name of "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web" to "Yahoo!", for which the official expansion was "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle".
Filo and Yang selected the name because they liked the word's general definition, which comes from Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth." Its URL was initially akebono.stanford.edu/yahoo. They created the Yahoo! domain on January 18, 1995.
