Pierre-Jules Fontaine Writes First Comprehensive Guide to Collecting Autographs

In 1836 Pierre Jules Fontaine published in Paris Manuel de l'amateur d'autographes. Fontaine's book was the first comprehensive guide to collecting autographes. It provided a history of all the auction sales of autographs that had been conducted in France from their beginning in 1822 up to 1836.
