Goldstine & von Neumann Write the First Theoretical Discussion of Programming a Stored-Program Computer

The first part of Herman Goldstine and John von Neumann’s Planning and Coding Problems for an Electronic Computing Instrument was published at Princeton in April 1947. The remaining two parts appeared on April 15 and August 16, 1948. This was the first theoretical discussion of programming for stored program computers—none of which yet operated. (See Reading 9.2.)
