Front or imperial side of the Cross of Lothair, dating c. 1000 CE, from the cathedral treasury at Aachen. This is a first-century AD sardonyx three-layered cameo of the Roman Emperor Augustus holding an eagle sceptre.^6] This is a processional cross; it is encrusted  with 102 gems and 36 pearls.
