The deceptively simple gold stamping on the upper cover are a paleolithic handaxe above a mastodon tooth. It was the discovery by Boucher de Perthes of stone tools in proximity and in the same geological strata as the bones of extinct animals that initiated the research leading to the acceptance by Lyell and other establishment scientists of the antiquity of man.
