"Broadcast Yourself" : YouTube is Founded

In February 2005 three former employees of Paypal — Steven Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim — founded the video sharing website, YouTube.  Its first headquarters were above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. 

Most of the content on YouTube is uploaded by individuals, but media corporations including CBS, the BBC, Vevo, Hulu, and other organizations offer some of their material via YouTube, as part of the YouTube partnership program.

On October 9, 2006, Google, which had been competing with YouTube via its Google Video video hosting service, bought YouTube.
