Queen Victoria Charters the University of London's External Programme, the First Distance Learning Program

In 1858 Queen Victoria chartered the University of London's External Programme, (Now University of London Worldwide) making it the first university to offer distance learning degrees by mail to students. Charles Dickens referred to the non-denominational University of London as the "People's University" because it provided access to higher education to students from less affluent backgrounds,
