"Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung", the First Photographically Illustrated News Magazine

In 1901, when it became technically feasible to print halftones of photographs inside a magazine, publisher Leopold Ullstein introduced this innovation into the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, developing it into the prototype of the modern news magazine. The magazine pioneered the photo-essay, maintained a specialized staff and production unit for photographs and a photo library.
