Notably the steam-powered presses are operated by women; however the image blurs over the necessary gears and cylinders, and emphasizes the belts from the steam engine driving the presses. The presses appear to be of the Adams type.

The proprietors of Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion printed in Boston, Massachusetts were proud to display their very large press-room in which women operated the large steam-driven presses. All the gears and cylinders of the presses were blurred over in this image printed on p. 352 of volume 2 (1852).
