Many images of early printing machines were published within the two decades of their operation, but among the earliest images of a printing machine connected to a steam engine was the image published of an Applegath & Cowper double cylinder perfecting machine connected to a Maudslay Table Engine published by Charles Henry Timperley in his Dictionary of Printers and Printing, with the Progress of Literature, Ancient and Modern (London, 1839). The image  faced p. 855 of Timperley's very long compilation. Timperley was also the author of The Printer's Manual (1838). The sheets of these two works were reissued with some additions in 1842 by H. G. Bohn as Encyclopedia of Literary and Typographical Anecdote. This volume extended to 996pp. densely set in two columns plus a small supplement.
