In his History of the Cotton Manufacture in Great Britain... published as parliament was beginning to regulate working conditions of adults and children in cotton mills, Sir Edward Baines included some of the best illustrations people working with the machinery in the cotton factories. Like Andrew Ure, Baines viewed the impact of the factory system upon the working classes as fundamentally benign.
