By 1790 Birmingham was the metal manufacturing center of England. A key product was buckles, the manufacturing of which may have employed up to 5000 people in the city. Edward Thomason, who learned manufacturing from Matthew Boulton of Boulton & Watt, manufactured a wide variety of metal products as advertised on this engraved advertisement that was presumably handed out to visitors to the Thomason Manufactory at Church Street in Birmingham. The factory, which employed state of the art manufacturing techniques, was often visited by representatives from foreign governments who wanted to learn Thomason's advanced manufacturing methods. A notice at the end of the engraved sheet indicates that Thomason did not allow competing manufacturers from Birmingham to study his manufacturing techniques.
