in 1971 Alan Shugart at IBM San Jose introduced the first flexible magnetic storage diskette, or "floppy disk." The 23 FD 8-inch floppy disk drive with removable read-only flexible "memory disks" provided storage capacity of 80 kilobytes, or the data recorded on about 3,000 punched cards.
